07/27/26 -Why Everything Is Annoying Me Right Now

Have you noticed that by the end of summer, your patience just seems… shorter?

You’re more easily irritated. Your sleep may not be as good. Your emotions feel closer to the surface. And little things that normally wouldn’t bother you suddenly feel like a much bigger deal.

I see this pattern every year.

Most people assume they’re stressed, overwhelmed, or simply not managing life very well. But Chinese Medicine gives us another way to look at what may be happening.

When Summer Starts to Catch Up With You

In Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the Fire element.

Fire represents joy, connection, activity, and outward expression—all the things we tend to experience more of during summer.

But summer also asks a lot from us.

More travel. More social gatherings. Later nights. Different routines. More heat. More activity. More stimulation.

All of that requires energy.

By the end of the season, you may realize you’ve spent a lot more energy than you’ve replenished.

Chinese Medicine teaches that excessive Fire can disturb the Shen, often described as our spirit or emotional center. When the Shen isn’t settled, we may feel more restless, reactive, emotionally sensitive, or simply not quite like ourselves.

Modern science uses different language, but we recognize similar patterns with nervous system dysregulation, disrupted sleep, chronic stimulation, and inadequate recovery.

Different language. Same human experience.

Maybe You Don't Need More Discipline

Instead of immediately criticizing yourself for being impatient or overwhelmed, get curious about what your body has been navigating.

Ask yourself:

What has summer been asking from me?

And maybe more importantly:

What have I actually been doing to replenish what I’ve spent?

You may not need another supplement, stricter routine, or more discipline.

You may simply need more recovery.

That could mean getting back to a consistent bedtime, creating some quiet space in your schedule, saying no to one more social commitment, or intentionally supporting your nervous system.

Sometimes protecting your peace isn’t selfish or unproductive.

Sometimes it’s exactly what your health has been asking for.
